2017 Leoncito Red Wine

Our Leoncito (Spanish for little lion) is a proprietary blend that gives a nod to the Alexander Valley’s Hispanic heritage. Record breaking winter rainfall kicked off the season, replenishing soils and ponds. A gentle spring brought bud break at the normal time, pleasing us with small berries of excellent color. The hot summer ensued, peaking on Labor Day weekend. Our grapes fared well, but welcomed the cooler temperatures later in the season, allowing the red varietals to mature at a more gradual, even pace. Our Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc were co-fermented in a 10-ton fermenter, whereas the Merlot was later harvested fully ripe and fermented separately. Each varietal contributed; Cabernet Franc with its red fruit impressions (raspberry and cherry notes) and tobacco leaf aromatics; Petit Verdot added color, structure, and floral aromatics; and Merlot, in support, provided nuances of black fruits and plum flavors.
